Get found on ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemeni, Claude and other AI Models
Many attorneys and legal marketing departments are wondering “How can I rank better in ChatGPT?” and other LLMs like Claude, Perplexity and Gemeni. Understandably so, considering that growth in usage of these large language models are increasing substantially. In a law firm consumer study we ran earlier this year, nearly 21% of consumers said they would use chatGPT in their process of researching lawyers online.
The number of people using Large Language Models like chatGPT will continue to increase, so law firms should be thinking about LLM Optimization services. If fact, we’ve also seen some of our clients referral source data show that chatGPT is how they found the firm. It has already generated leads for some of our clients.
LLM Optimization is not the same as Search Engine Optimization
It’s important to understand that LLMs are not search engines, so optimizing for higher visibility is very different than SEO. This isn’t “ChatGPT SEO”, it’s LLMO (Large Language Model Optimization). Search engines like Google crawl billions of pages on the web and then index most of the pages it discovers to include it in their search engine. When someone queries their engine, they have an incredibly complex algorithm with thousands of ranking factors that determines how to present the results of all the pages in their index. LLMs like chatGPT on the other hand do not index web pages, although they are able to leverage search engines like Google and Bing to access real time information. LLMs attempt to formulate the best response or answer to the person using their model.
Optimizing for chatGPT (and LLM optimization in general) is different than traditional search engine optimization. In general, LLM optimization is focused more on brand mentions in key sources that their models utilize, review data business listings in key websites, relevance to the conversation, recency and source credibility. However, each model has it’s own underlying model architecture and levels of complexity. Additionally, we can count on frequent changes and updates to each of these models. Models like chatGPT 4o, Claude Sonnet 3.5, Llama 3.2, Perplexity, Google Gemini and Grok have all been updating more frequently, as they attempt to improve and compete with each other. For example, we are currently seeing ‘local pack’ type results in chatGPT 4o. In the image below, we see two of our clients positioned #1 and #4 in this query example of “Can you help me find the best personal injury lawyer in San Antonio?”. The map that is displayed is interactive, can be zoomed in and out and small cards appear for each firm along with driving directions, the ability to call the law firm, as well as visit the website. chatGPT is not just replying with some text as it has in the past.
Here is another example of our client in Austin, Texas:
We’ve been researching, experimenting and testing LLM optimization ever since chatGPT was created, and we are now offering LLM optimization services for attorneys. If you want to be found by more chatGPT users, we can help. Here’s a Google Analytics screenshot for one of our clients showing traffic from LLMS.
